Holiday Decorating for The 8 Elements
Feng Shui Your Space
Even those who don’t decorate for the four seasons or the various holidays throughout the year, will often put up at least a few Christmas lights and decorations in December. And if you know your personal feng shui element, you can decorate with the elements and colors, festive scenes and holiday themes that resonate the most with YOU! To learn how to decorate for your personal element, read on!
Very fittingly for a Soft Wood year, almost “real” looking greenery and natural decorations were a trend in 2023. Spruce garland, dark brown velvet ornaments and bows galore were hot items this Christmas season. Many people made homemade decorations and ornaments from items you can find on a nature walk or in a grocery or craft store. Minimalists opted for just string lights and some tinsel. And some of the more over the top holiday decorators, had fun with the vintage Santa theme and the classic red, white and green color story.
I’m not one to change my style from year to year. I keep it simple and classically elegant with white lights and gold accents with a few natural elements and homemade ornaments for a Victorian era theme. A bit of color from the jewel-toned velvet ribbons tied into bows, sugared cranberries and rosemary sprigs and shimmering faux frosted forest fruit, are my odes to the fond memories of doing The Nutcracker for so many years.
Whether you've already established a personal aesthetic for holiday decorating or buy whatever is available at the home decor stores each year, bring a color or material that represents your personal element into your holiday home decor.

I recommend reading last year’s blog, Feng Shui’ing Your Christmas Decor for tips on balancing the Five Elements in your holiday decorations.
Lighted Christmas trees, red decor, candles and fireplaces all represent the Fire element. In 2023, the best locations for your Christmas tree are the N, SE and SW. During the month of December, there must be absolutely no open flames or red decor in the East, South and NW of your home.
Whether you’re having a Little Women or Barbie Pink, Grinchmas or Classic Christmas, home alone or hygge inspired holidays, may you and yours have a very Merry Christmas!
