Bringing Classy Back

With a congresswoman groping her date in a dark theater and a congressman wearing basketball shorts and hoodies to work, leading to the removal of the dress code in the U.S. Senate, even the American “elite” have reached an unprecedented new low.

Every generation has taken a progressively descending path away from being classy. Boomers wore a lot of jeans and t-shirts, instead of the more formal attire of tailored suits and uniforms and fitted, feminine dresses of the previous World War era. Though more casual than their Boomer predecessors, Xers’ edgier fashion was far more modest than their skintight athleisure wearing successors. Millennial women wear, what my mom calls, the '“just raped” look, with bra straps showing and oversized tops hanging off one shoulder, as if they’d just been violently ravaged. And the newest no pants trend for Gen Z “girlies” is to walk around with, what looks like, nothing but a long t-shirt that barely covers their bum.

What’s next? Bathrobes and slippers in more locations than just the local Walmart? Or, clothing optional, with a “no shirt, no shoes, no problem” policy? Shudder the thought!

But it’s not just the fashion. It’s also the lack of basic manners and what used to be a standard measure of decorum and conventional propriety. Even a semblance of politeness has gone out the window, along with proper etiquette and common courtesy.

People these days are just plain rude. Handwritten letters and thank you notes are such a thing of the past that I don’t see them coming back really ever, except for a few poetic, vintage souls. But not replying to texts or messages has become so common they came up with a name for it - “ghosting”. I mean even people who own their own businesses don’t reply to emails from their clients and customers.

Then, there’s the inappropriate behavior in public. If you’ve read my previous blog, Not Seeking Attention, you know my thoughts on boss babes leading with their sexuality to get people to buy what they’re selling. And while I do think taking a four-year old daughter to watch you teach middle-aged women how to express their sexy selves on a vertical pole or horizontal on a mat is inappropriate, I honestly have no problem with pole dancing in the context of taking a class or even practicing in the privacy of your own home. But dressing like a stripper, filming porn that belongs on Only Fans and posting it on Instagram? Not classy.

Being classy in the way you present yourself to the world through your appearance and behavior is really just an expression of respect. Respect for others and respect for yourself. So, show yourself some fucking self-respect. And bring classy back!

Pearls of Wisdom is a personal blog of the wisdom writings of Dara Eden that fall outside the realms of feng shui, The 8 Elements and her other personal energy work. Established in 2014, the blog is an expression of her highest values: Sovereignty, Truth, Wisdom & Inner Peace. It’s devoted to increasing awareness, expanding consciousness, bringing knowledge, sharing innerstandings and offering wisdom to the sovereign souls inhabiting the Earth.

Dara Eden is a writer and wisdom keepHER. The name, Dara, means “pearl of wisdom”. Pearls are formed when a microscopic irritant, like a grain of sand, embeds itself within the soft tissue of a shelled mollusk. To protect itself, the oyster or clam covers the invading gritty particle with concentric layers of iridescent crystalline calcium to form treasures, pearls of great beauty and worth. Gifts of the sea, pearls are the oldest known gem and the only gem that does not need to be cut, shaped or polished. Pearls are associated with elegance and luxury and are a symbol of mystery and purity. Pearls represent priceless knowledge, the rare wisdom that begins as a tiny, random, common irritant.
