Spring Detox
RITUAL: Detox | SEASON: Spring | HEALTH: Physical
It’s common for people to do a deep clean of their home in Springtime. They like to do a thorough housecleaning of everything from top to bottom, going over every surface and under every furnishing. From walls to windows, floors to ceilings, and everything in between.
As the days get warmer and brighter, there are a few things we can add to our self care rituals for Spring. We can get more sunlight and move our bodies more. We can enjoy more fresh air and fresh foods.
You can do your own internal spring cleaning with a Spring Detox. In addition to a parasite cleanse, there are other detox protocols you can do in the Springtime. Some may involve herbal supplements, detoxification methods or other holistic practices.
Spring is represented by the Wood element. The Wood element is associated with the liver and gallbladder, thyroid, and feet and ankles. So, these are the organs and parts of the body to take especially good care of.
Liver Detox
Toxins can build up in the body, especially in the liver. This is the perfect time of year to provide the liver with some herbal support to help with the detoxification process. You can take herbal supplements in the form of capsules or tinctures, infusions or teas.
I take a dandelion tincture from Herb Pharm in the morning on an empty stomach. I like to take Milk Thistle capsules during the day. At night I drink a dandelion tea from Traditional Medicinals.
Some of the best detoxification herbs that help to support the liver are:
Barberry
Burdock
Chicory
Dandelion
Licorice
Milk Thistle
Other herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine are: astragalus, danshen, ginseng, and ginkgo biloba. Ginger, garlic and turmeric are also beneficial, as well as, green tea.
Gallbladder Flush
If you think you might have some gallstones, I recommend doing some research about how to dissolve them safely and effectively. Watch some videos by Dr. Eric Berg DC to educate yourself about how they are formed and ways you can help your body flush them out. Consult your natural health practitioner for advice, recommendations or a holistic protocol.
Thyroid Detox
There are several ways to gently detox the thyroid. The first way is to release toxins through the skin by sweating with daily exercise or time in an infrared sauna. The next way is to do some lymphatic drainage with body gua sha, bamboo tapping, dry brushing, gentle massage and rebounding. Stretching, yoga and low impact movement like walking, can also help with moving and draining the lymph. Supporting the elimination of toxins through the liver, colon and kidneys is also an essential part of a thyroid detox. Take herbal supplements to support these vital detox organs, drink plenty of purified water and eat nutrient dense veggies that are high in vitamins, minerals and fiber.
Metal Detox
Parasites tend to hide from the immune system within heavy metals stored in the body. One of the best ways to detox from heavy metal is chlorella. The cleanest chlorella comes from Taiwan. I get the tablets from HealthForce SuperFoods. Their Chlorella Manna is made in Taiwan.
I like to take the tablets first thing in the morning with a big glass of lemon water on an empty stomach. I take 20 tablets and wait 20-30 minutes to have my first cup of coffee or tea. You can ask your body how many you need.
Foot Detox
Foot detox baths are easy to do at home. Just add some Epsom salt or Dead Sea salt, baking soda and detoxification essential oils. I like Zendocrine from doTERRA.
You can also detox with an ionic foot bath. Invest in your own or find a holistic practitioner or spa that offers ionic foot baths.
Greens Detox
You can benefit from green juices without doing a 3-7 day “juice cleanse”. Just start your morning with a freshly pressed green juice. I like to juice celery, cucumber, green apple, lemon and ginger.
Instead of coffee switch to green tea in the Spring. You can make a matcha latte. Or, just steep some green tea leaves and enjoy!
Eat lots of greens in Spring! Dark, leafy greens, sprouts and micro greens are a good option. Or, any green veggies, especially cruciferous vegetables, like green cabbage, broccoli and Brussel sprouts, are excellent. Properly fermented greens like homemade pickled cucumbers, sauerkraut and kimchi are good choices for Spring, as well. You can use Spring greens to make some flavorful green soups or green smoothies or nutrient dense green salads with a green herb enriched Green Goddess dressing.
