Soft Wood is "All About That Bass"
In the wake of the "break the Internet" event brought to us by Soft Wood and reality TV star, Kim Kardashian this week, in Paper magazine, it's time to address why this Soft Wood year has been "All About that Bass".
The Soft Wood element is... associated with muscles, sinews and tendons, the lower lumbar and the organs located within the hips, and the thighs/buttocks region of the body. Soft Wood is represented by the largest muscle of the body, the gluteus maximus and this year it is making an appearance on a grand scale. In addition, the word "shake" is associated with the Wood element. Soft Wood and singer-songwriter, Taylor Swift made it popular in her #1 hit "Shake it Off" featuring many dance styles, including twerking.
This year we have seen more attention focused on the female derrière than ever in recent history. Female vocal artists of many genres now wear cheeky bodysuits that make you wonder if they forgot their pants. Then, with the advent of twerking, we see the "shake that thang" move in a lot of dance choreography, inspiring shake off competitions. Nicki Minaj's pornographic "Anaconda" references the opening line from the 1992 "Baby Got Back", "O My God! Look at her butt!" and "little in the middle but she got much back". Then, there’s the how-to twerking tutorial, "Booty" by Jennifer Lopez Ft. Iggy Azalea featuring a lot of bootylicious boom boom. Even the ice cream cone in Katy Perry's "This is How We Do" is twerking.
While some people are relieved to see that "all the right junk in all the right places" is being normalized, others fear that it glamorizes being fat ("he can tell I ain't missing no meals") and that men who don't want none unless you got Kardashian sized bunz hon is just another fad. Some people have the genes for a fat ass. The less naturally endowed are "bringing booty back" with Brazilian butt lifts, poor eating habits, padded undergarments and specialized fitness training.
Women know that the hour glass figure is attractive to many men but what may not be so obvious is that having a "boom boom that all the boys chase" is a biological program for procreation (survival of the species). Wide hips denote the ability to give birth, large breasts the ability to feed their babies and a flat stomach or tiny waist tells men that they are not yet pregnant by another man. Big assets are also a cultural preference in countries where famine is a large part of the human life cycle, creating the need for women to carry large amounts of stored energy on their bodies.
Here is Meghan Trainor proving she can "shake it, shake it" like she's supposed to do...
