Born A Healer

ICM Blog - Born a Healer

I always knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wanted to be a healer. Of course, when I was a little girl I thought being a healer meant going to school to become a doctor or a nurse. I would dress up in my nurse costume for Halloween, ask for a toy doctor's kit for Christmas or wear my candy striper uniform to "play doctor". I would borrow books from my local library about the human body and the medical profession. Later in junior high I would read a book by the McDougalls and was shocked to find out what patenting does to the green plants we were given to use for health and healing. What I learned set me on a path of wellness and holistic living. After high school I began earning my degree in Natural Health Studies.

In the meantime I got married and had two children. Both Daniel, now 10 and Larissa, 8 were born naturally at home in water. I breastfed both of my babies for 2 years and made food for them from natural whole foods. After my daughter was born I went organic and chemical free. I became a member of Barefoot Mamas, a local support group for holistic parents. A beautiful friend introduced me to raw food and I began teaching myself how to make raw foods from the seasonal organic produce I found at the local farmer's market. Then, I started experimenting with gluten free baking. I discovered the benefits of eating real traditional foods and started making my own re-mineralizing toothpaste. I joined my local chapter of Slow Food USA and volunteered my time and talents to their cause: Good, Clean & Fair Food. Friends would call me up and ask "Dr. Dara" for advice on health and wellness, nutrition, supplementation, natural remedies, recipes, and intuitive messages.

Professionally, my career took a turn toward the field of energy. I studied feng shui and began writing my forthcoming book about The 8 Elements. I was asked to provide coaching based on my discoveries and understanding of The 8 Elements, especially as it applied to my clients' personal well being and relationships. It was through a feng shui client that I was introduced to Reiki. I received a healing during my first Reiki session and six months later felt called to begin my study of the Japanese form of energy medicine, Usui Reiki. During my Reiki Mastership Program I studied Qi Gong, meditation and began my practice of Vinyasa Yoga.

My daily spiritual practice has become an expression of self care that keeps me centered and balanced. Every application of the various forms of energy medicine that I use with my clients, I use to heal myself. The old adage: "Physician heal thyself" allows me to also honor the Hippocratic oath to "first do no harm". As an energy medicine woman I love to use my healing modalities to heal others. My personal use of prayer, the art of blessing, intention setting, energy statements, clearings and shieldings, hands on healing like Reiki and Jin Shin Jyutsu, Angel Therapy, water, crystal, music and aromatherapy, breath work and meditation, Universal Healing Codes, Qi Gong and Yoga have allowed me to see how valuable energy medicine can be for self care.

Born a healer? Yes! I am a healer and so are you! Each and every one of us was born to heal. Our bodies have the innate ability for growth, self regulation and self-repair. We can heal ourselves and we can heal each other.

Let the healing begin with you and me. Let it begin with a deep slow breath (or four or five). Then send a blessing to someone you love or even to someone you hate. Sit in silence and smile (with your liver) for a few minutes everyday. Talk to your angels like they are your best friends. Wrap yourself up in a rose colored light of unconditional love. Know that the Universe is conspiring on your behalf. Expect good things to happen today. Be grateful. Go to yoga. Feng Shui or at least de-clutter your home. Tap into your own healing abilities. Take Reiki I for self-care. Be happy NOW!
