Summer Staycation

HR Blog - Summer Staycation

RITUAL: Vacation | SEASON: Summer | MONTH: July

This time of year many people go on summer vacations. Young people might go backpacking through Europe, staying in hostels along the way. Couples might spend a few weeks on a tropical island at a luxurious resort. Families might have a mountain cabin by a lake or a beach house on the coast.

Vacations don’t have to cost a lot of money. Nor do you have to travel long distances to take some well-earned leisure time off. You can go on a series of day trips or weekend getaways close to home to save on flights and hotels. That way you can put your money into doing fun outings and enjoying delicious meals.

Start by being a tourist in your own hometown. Plan a day or a weekend of activities that someone visiting your area might want to do. Go for a hike or find a scenic spot to have a picnic. Play a game of miniature golf. Dress up and dine at a restaurant you only go to on special occasions.

You can even turn your own home into a vacation destination. Start by turning off your phones. Then, make up the beds with fresh sheets and bathrooms with fresh towels. Prepare a pitcher of water with fresh fruit, citrus, cucumbers and mint to sip on. Make yourself a refreshing drink and head outside to sunbathe or read a novel in a hammock in the shade. Take a luxurious bath. Order in a meal from your favorite local restaurant. Watch a movie in bed or outside under the stars.

Make your backyard a campsite. Play some fun outdoor games like frisbee or badminton. If you have a fire pit, make s’mores. Pitch a tent to take a nap in out of the sun or to sleep in all night. If it’s too hot outside or rainy, have an indoor picnic on a blanket in the living room or set up your tent inside.

Plan a staycation with a theme based on a favorite book or movie, country or city you’d like to visit. Put some outfits together that reflect a favorite culture or era. Make some special foods or treats, drinks or dishes.

Or, maybe you want to extend your excursions to destinations within driving distances. Plan a road trip to a national forest for a walk in the woods. Rent a tiny house to stay in for a night. Go to a day spa or visit a local hot springs.
