Your Mother’s Element
Mother's Day Gift Guide
One of the ways people show their love is to give gifts. Although the majority of annual holidays, promoted by corporations, are centered around excessive consumerism, Mother’s Day tends to be a little less about the presents and more about our presence. Of course, you can buy all the things that companies are trying to sell you. But you can also put some thought into making Mother’s Day special for your mom, with or without the gift wrap.
Mothers usually just want the day off of household chores and cooking or to spend it with their children and family. New moms need a nap and enough alone time for a leisurely bath. Young moms like cards made by their kids and a yummy breakfast made by a loving husband and the father of her children. Middle aged moms are touched by heartfelt expressions of appreciation, kind offers and thoughtful gestures. And older moms feel loved when they are celebrated by their children and grandchildren. For single moms, Mother’s Day can just be another Sunday, especially when their children are little and they don’t have any extended or supportive family.
Taking mom to mid-morning brunch, lunch after church or a nice Sunday dinner is a common tradition for families on Mother’s Day. That way mom doesn’t have to host a family gathering and do any of the event planning, grocery shopping, house cleaning, table setting, meal preparing and clean up. She can just take her time getting dressed up and be taken out to a special meal with all of the people who love her the most in the world.
The Five Love Languages
Knowing your mom’s love language can be helpful when deciding what to get her or planning an event for Mother’s Day. If you don’t already know her love language, ask her. If you do, take that quality information into consideration.
A mom whose love language is acts of service, might like her house cleaned, laundry done or car washed. A mom whose love language is words of affirmation might like to read a handwritten letter or card. A mom who’s love language is physical touch might like a hug, a foot rub or a gift certificate to get a massage. A mom whose love language is quality time might like to get a coffee with her adult child or spend the afternoon watching classic movies with her children. And a mom whose love language is gifts might like some fresh flowers or sentimental jewelry.
Even if your mother’s primary love language is not gifts, you can be a thoughtful gift giver by knowing her personal feng shui element. If you don’t already know your mom’s personal element, you can discover it here. The 8 Elements are associated with certain colors and special interests that can inform your choices when it comes to gifts.
Gifts don’t have to come wrapped and tied up with a bow. Consider gift certificates and gift cards, day passes or concert tickets, annual subscriptions or monthly memberships, health consultations or healing sessions. Or, make your own coupon book of household chores, tasks or errands, child care and a mom’s night off.
Gifts don’t have to be expensive or store bought. If you have a garden, cut some flowers for a bouquet from your own backyard. Make a card instead buying a generic pre-printed one from Hallmark. Paint or draw her a picture. Bake some bread and make her favorite marmalade or lemon curd, jam or butter. Get a few supplies to make some crystal jewelry or essential oil scented bath salts, brownie mix or your own blend of teas. And if you see her in person, give her a hug.
For the woman who has everything, gift her an experience. Water elements may enjoy a day at the lake, beach or hot springs or attending a silent retreat. Mother Earth may enjoy taking a dance or cooking class, sculpting or pottery making class. Hard Wood may enjoy visiting a botanical garden, farmer’s market or nursery. Soft Wood may enjoy forest bathing, walking through an arboretum or attending a team sports game. Hard Metal my enjoy a road trip or train ride, target practice at the shooting range, going to a live concert or visiting an observatory to see the stars. Soft Metal may enjoy going to an art gallery or fine art museum, renaissance fair, theme park, dinner theater or escape room with friends. Mountain Earth may enjoy visiting a natural history museum or doing extreme sports like rock climbing, mountain biking or skydiving. And Fire may enjoy spending the day outlet shopping in a desert resort, visiting historical buildings like the Spanish missions or Catholic cathedrals or going on a pilgrimage to a religious landmark.
Gift baskets are also a thoughtful way to show you really know and love her. Of course you can fill a basket with her favorite foods and drinks or snacks and desserts. Or, you can put together a themed box or basket of things she can enjoy on another day or throughout the year.
